What The New York Times Missed In Their Article On Nashville

Nashville. It's an interesting place. If you've been here, you are familiar with the unique vibe that sets it apart from all other cities. We're southern, but not too much. We're cultured, but we remember our roots. We love music - all kinds, not just country. We love food so much that the explosion of restaurants recently got a write up in GQ.

So when the New York Times did a piece on the city Wednesday, I rejoiced. But when I started reading, I quickly got frowny. In all of the accolades, there was no mention of our incredible literary scene.

Introducing a new literary magazine: 2nd and Church

Dear writers:

2nd and Church went live on the Web today!

From the website:

“Welcome to 2nd & Church, a literary journal by, for, and about writers and readers throughout Tennessee. Our goal is to be inclusive of many different types of writers and writing: creative nonfiction, technical writing, literary fiction, poetry, translation, commercial fiction.”

You can buy paper copies from the website.

Once on the site, click on the MagCloud link. If you buy a paper copy, you get a free digital copy as a PDF.

And even if you don't buy a paper copy, you can download a free digital version!

2nd and Church will be launching tonight at Literary Libations at Union Station Hotel. We're meeting in the bar under the portrait of Jack Nicholson from 5:30-7:30 - Literacy Libations (#litlib) is free, casual and congenial, and there is valet parking at the hotel for $3.

On a more personal note, I am honored to be a cover feature along with my dear friend and fellow author River Jordan. Paige Crutcher interviewed me and I interviewed River, so this first issue is a wee bit incestuous, but in a good way. Plus there are tons of features and stories, so it is well worth checking out.

I am so excited about 2nd and Church, and not just because we're featured, but because it is a testament to the literary renaissance Nashville is undergoing. Roy Burkhead, editor of 2nd and Church, has worked tirelessly for months to put this together. His vision is astounding, and all Tennessee writers will benefit from his hard work.

So thank you, Roy. From all of us to you - Bravo!

A little about Roy Burkhead, editor of 2nd and Church and founder of The Writer's Loft, here.

Calling All Nashville Publishing People

First Literary Libations on May 12, 5-7pm

Greetings!

The Nashville Dutch Lunch gatherings continue monthly with random by invitation gatherings in downtown Nashville hosted by various, beautiful writerly type people.

HOWEVER, JT Ellison and River Jordan were searching for a way to host a monthly gathering of writers, agents, publishers, librarians, booksellers, publicists, reviewers, journalists, and so forth where people could come at will and have no need to RSVP. Just a show if you care and dare.

So LITERARY LIBATIONS was born. SIMPLY PUT -

THE 4th THURSDAY OF EVERY MONTH - 5-7pm we shall gather to talk writing, books, words, business, and road trip stories.

ALWAYS - at the Union Station Historic Hotel. Valet parking provided.

Join us for a grand time for the first Literary Libations on May 12, 5-7pm. Putting a little swank in our step and looking forward to seeing your faces. Feel free to pass the word to your writerly friends and associates. If twittering please use hash tag #litlib. For friends from out of town - this is just your general invite. Rooms are available at the beautiful Union Station, and for you to share with friends from across the miles.

All our best,

River and JT
