NO ONE KNOWS mass market is here!

NO ONE KNOWS is out in mass market paperback today, and I am so excited to share it with you!

It has a spiffy new cover, and I was able to do a pass through, fixing some tiny issues. But even more importantly…

For the first time in print and ebook in the US, the original ending for the book has been restored!

Why would I want to change the ending? Well, this is now the original ending I submitted. My editor wanted something slightly different, but it’s always felt… incomplete to me. The fine folks at Gallery books agreed, and so here it is!

NO ONE KNOWS was my first standalone novel. It was a leap forward in style, much more “literary” than my series novels. It was the first time I really stretched my wings as a writer—leveled up, as we like to say. I am obscenely proud of my debut effort at a standalone. It was a Book of the Month selection, was long listed for the SIBA Southern Book award, was an Okra Pick, was a She Reads pick, made Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Summer Reading Guide, and, thanks to you, hit the USA Today list.

If you haven’t heard the story behind the plot of NO ONE KNOWS, you should read this: THE SECRET PROJECT IS NO LONGER A SECRET. It’s a fun peek into the origins of this novel. I hope you love it, and if you haven’t read the book, now’s your chance.

About NO ONE KNOWS:

With the same page-turning suspense as The Husband’s Secret, New York Times bestselling author J.T. Ellison’s No One Knows is a “riveting…skillfully plotted” (Publishers Weekly) thriller that questions if the narrator’s husband really has returned from the dead—or if she’s merely losing her mind.

Aubrey Hamilton has been mourning her missing husband for five years, despite being the prime suspect in his murder. When he is officially declared dead, there are still more questions than answers: Why didn’t Josh show up at his friend’s bachelor party? Was he murdered, or did he run away? And is the new, mysterious man in Aubrey’s life as familiar as he appears, or have years of loneliness and confusion finally driven her mad?

No One Knows is an evocative mystery that explores the complex darkness within all of us, perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Liane Moriarty, and Paula Hawkins.

Haven’t read A THOUSAND DOORS yet? Publishers Weekly called it fascinating and gave it a starred review, and Bookreporter said it was worth the wait. Here’s some more about the book:

The day Mia Jensen died, she finally got to live.

We’ve all played the “what if” game. For forty-year-old Mia Jensen, “what if” is a fact of life. Dissatisfied with her choices, she often dreams about what could have been. Now she has the chance to know. But that knowledge will cost her dearly. Only through death can she fully realize the value of her life.

After a terrible day, trying to figure out how she’s come to this point—alone, on the cusp of divorce––Mia hears a strange noise in her kitchen. When she investigates, she is attacked and left for dead. As Mia dies, she experiences some of the lives that could have been hers had she only made a different choice.

Can one woman find peace with the path she’s chosen before it slips through her fingers forever?

Through the unique voices of New York Times bestsellers and rising stars in women’s fiction, A THOUSAND DOORS examines how our smallest decisions create lasting effects, and asks the ultimate question—can we actually change our lives?

Bringing Mia to life are the following fabulous authors:

NO ONE KNOWS mass market cover reveal!

I am thrilled to announce NO ONE KNOWS will be coming out in mass market paperback September 24! It has a spiffy new cover, and I was able to do a pass through, fixing some tiny issues.

Also, for the first time in print and ebook in the US, the original ending for the book has been restored. 🎉

Ever since I agreed to change the ending, I’ve felt something was missing from the book. It was too abrupt the way it was originally published. The addition of the original ending truly finishes out the book, and I hope you feel the same.

It was both fun and alarming to reread this book. It’s not something I’ve ever done—once a book is published, that’s it. I might listen to the audio, but I don’t reread. Ever. It’s a rule. Because of course there are a hundred things I would change, if I could. I think that hold true for many authors.

But this time, with the permission of my editor, I did just that. The book took place 6 years ago in Nashville—I adjusted a few things to be more current. I smoothed some rough edges. I addressed a mistake that made it through. Little things, here and there.

All around, it was a joyous experience. This was my first standalone novel. It’s much more “literary” than my series novels. It was the first time I really stretched my wings as a writer—leveled up, as we like to say. I am obscenely proud of my debut effort at a standalone. The Sixth Day Trade Paperback is Here!

Happy Release day to us! THE SIXTH DAY trade paperback is on sale today! Look at this gorgeous artwork! It’s stunning, and I love it! To celebrate, here are some insights about how we put together the book, the research we did, and a few other little tidbits. Hope you enjoy!

I’ll be the first to admit, naming the 5th book in the Brit in the FBI series THE SIXTH DAY shows a small lack of foresight on our part, as now that the 6th book is underway, I keep finding myself saving files to the Sixth Day folder. A small price to pay, though, for what I think is the most intricate, intense ride of the series thus far.

Set in London, Nicholas and Mike are up against a villain who thinks he’s a descendent of Vlad the Impaler, and believes the lost pages of the Voynich Manuscript hold the answers to save his twin brother from the grips of severe hemophilia. (Get it - vampires, hemophilia…) Plus, there is some high-tech madness, and a drone army, and falcons named after the original Cabal. Trust me when I say Nicholas and Mike have their hands full.

You might wonder how Catherine and I cook up these crazy plots. Normally, we meet at her place in California, but for this book, we set up shop in a lovely hotel in Manhattan, with oodles of tea and bacon (the staples of life) being brought by room service, and started throwing ideas against the wall.  We had two basic concepts to start with — the Voynich Manuscript and Vlad Dracul —  and we tossed out plot twists until they began to gel into a plausible story.

We had so many cool ideas for THE SIXTH DAY I often wondered how we would manage to fit them all in. But we did, and the result is a mind-bending thriller that will leave you breathless.

A part of this book’s inspiration was a family affair. I have to give props to my dad and my brothers for inspiring the falcons in the book. We were walking on the beach last year and my eldest brother mentioned a documentary he’d seen about a falcon hospital in Saudi Arabia. My dad had forwarded me a story about the French using eagles and falcons to take down drones just days before … and my middle brother mentioned he’d recently seen a story about a Saudi Prince booking seats for 80 of his falcons on board a plane. I was hooked on these ideas and ran to Catherine and said — Roman has to be a falconer. She bought in immediately, for which I will be forever grateful.

In that vein, I also have to give props to Helen Macdonald for her incredible book H IS FOR HAWK (recommended to me years ago by my very first editor, so how’s that for full circle), and Deborah Harkness for introducing me to the Voynich in her incredible ALL SOULS series. These inspirations truly helped bring this book to life.

Thanks to all!

I hope you enjoy THE SIXTH DAY – let me know what you think!

WHEN SHADOWS FALL has a new cover!

Welcome to the bright and shiny new digital edition of WHEN SHADOWS FALL! My publishers are repackaging the series in fabulous new covers, and I’m so excited to share them with you. For your enjoyment, here’s a peek inside the origins of the novel!

__________

I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but my eleventh novel will be born into the world soon. WHEN SHADOWS FALL is the third Samantha Owens novel, a seminal book in the series, as it decides the course of action for the next several books.

Every series has a path, planned or unplanned. When I started writing my Taylor Jackson series, I had no idea it was going to be a series. I hadn’t thought about extended story, structure, character development. I created a finite character in a finite world, and it was difficult to see where to take the books.

With Sam, it was the opposite. I knew I wanted a character who could grow and change remarkably. I knew I wanted to allow her the freedom to move around the country, the world, with relative ease. As my then-editor and I were planning the first book in the series, I mentioned I wanted Sam to be the Indiana Jones of forensic pathology. The idea stuck.

What happens in this book wasn’t supposed to happen until book 4 in the series. It’s funny, the same thing happened to me in the Taylor series. The third book, JUDAS KISS, was supposed to be the fourth. I made mention of my idea for it, hoping to entice my editor to buy the book when I was finished with the third I had planned. Instead, she jumped on the idea and told me in no uncertain terms this was the ONE.

So when I found myself in the same position this time, I knew what I needed to do. Abandon the story and move the next book into its place. I couldn’t let Sam languish in her sorrow any longer. It was time for her to move on. To start anew. Insert resurrection clauses here.

Of course, Sam wasn’t aware of the change her life was about to take. She wasn’t particularly ready to move on, not really. And I had to tell her, Too bad, sister. I’ll let you have some onscreen sex to make up for it.

I think its one of the most part of the fun being a writer, this game you play with your characters. I once asked a very famous writer about how characters sometimes do their own thing, and he looked at me like I was a recent escapee from an insane asylum and declared his characters would never do such a thing because they only did what he told them to do.

I find that so sad. I like that my characters and I have this sort of push and pull relationship. They give me some of what I want, I give them some of what they want. In the end, we’re all happy and moving on to the next adventure. At least, that’s the plan. After wrestling alligators with them for 500 pages, they damn well better be ready to move on. Cause if they’re not, they often end up dead. Or maimed. Or married off, or on the run.

Poor characters. Poor, poor characters. Better behave, or I’ll make your life hell.

But Sam behaved, and she was rewarded with many exciting things, all of which set up the rest of the series. I’m not one-hundred percent sure where we go from here, but I love that book three has become this seminal turning point for the Sam. And as such, for Xander and Fletcher too. The whole cast is being thrust into a new world because I got impatient. I hope they continue to behave!
